  • Using the RPR 1650 system to remove protective coatings results in 65-70% energy usage reduction compared to standard methods such as UHP jetting or grit blasting. It is also quieter and produces no HAVs.

In many cases the RPR system is faster than other methods, but one major benefit is the minimal impact on other processes: e.g. Tank Inspection, fabrication and welding and  can be conducted simultaneously with the RPR system INSIDE the tank.

  • Coming to the potentially hazardous winter period toward the end of 2016, with the devastating floods which swamped parts Cumbria as a result of Storm Desmond fresh in everyone’s minds, Sapphire Utility Solutions undertook a programme of a gully
(drain) cleansing to ensure the county’s streets drain quickly and effectively. It became evident that there was limited knowledge of the pipework and connections that the gully network uses and only very limited information on existing culverts and chambers across the network.

Working closely with Cumbria County Council, Sapphire Utility Solutions also introduced an ‘asset inventory’ service as an integral part of the contract, clarifying the assets and adding newly discovered asset items to the inventory. To provide the council with central access to the inventory, we worked with asset management software company, Kaarbontech, to deliver a bespoke software platform, capturing near real-time visibility of cleansing information and eld operations.

  • SANDWASHTM Grit Washer updated and improved

For grit washing, the SANDWASHTM is one of the most effective options. SPIRAC has brought significant improvements to the SANDWASHTM unit, but this is still the grit washer that can satisfy high demands of those applications where any visible organics on the grit is unacceptable.

Coupled with high capacity, efficient operation, and low power consumption - not to mention little need for maintenance - SANDWASHTM is a powerful grit washing solution.

Recently, SPIRAC updated the SANDWASHTM to improve functionality, while further reducing costs.

    The new and improved SANDWASHTM

This section will take a closer look at the major changes in the updated SANDWASHTM.

    ·        An optional VSD allows for optimization of the grit screw discharge speed to all for optimum water drainage from the grit, depending on the plant grit loading.

    ·        Any retained screenings are swept over the weir by the stirrer wiper arm to ensure that no blockages can occur over time.

    ·        A multi-diffuser plate assembly with permeable rubber sandwiched between two perforated plates creates a constant velocity wash water profile through the lower grit chamber.  This fluidizes the grit particles and through constant motion removes the organic particles from the grit.  The stirrer assembly ensures that any lumps or stubborn grit pockets get dispersed and washed.

  • Network reinforcement is expensive and cannot always be carried out in time to respond to the demands of LCT connections on the low voltage (LV) network, particularly if rapid clustering occurs (such as with electric vehicles and PV installations). The LV Connect and Manage Method - based on PPC's Broadband Powerline communications - involves the deployment of a communications and control infrastructure to allow LCTs to connect to the network and be managed in an active way. This will involve, for instance, limiting the power exported by LCTs to the network at times of network congestion or increasing the power demand of LCTs (heat pumps, energy storage and/or EVs) to keep the network within technical limits.

  • A device which protects power systems from disruption and damage to network infrastructure has won extra funding for commercial development.

FaultCurrent Ltd uses ground-breaking magnetic technology to allow the existing power grid to cope with excessive fault conditions, brought about by the rapid move towards decentralisation of electricity generation, including the connection of alternative energy sources such as wind and solar.

Developed as a spin-out from research undertaken at Cardiff University, the device is inactive during normal power flow and only reacts when excessive fault currents are detected, inhibiting the flow to allow the existing power network protection systems to safely isolate the problem.

Eriez Investments Ltd becomes a shareholder in FaultCurrent, and Eriez Magnetics Europe Limited, who were engaged in the manufacture of FaultCurrent’s full-scale prototype, will manufacture the commercial product under license at its facility in Caerphilly, South Wales.

  • GF Piping Systems NDT Service

19 May 2017 by: Simon Alder GF Piping Systems

The value of GF Piping System’s widely specified HDPE & PROGEF (PP) pipe systems has just been enhanced through the development of the world’s first non-destructive testing (NDT) regime for HDPE products, which now allows the manufacturer to issue a “Fit for Service” certificate on both Electrofusion and butt welds. Contractors already benefitted from the inclusion of a ‘completion indicator’ on individual couplings such as Tee or Crosses, but the new service now offers complete peace of mind for the whole project team regarding the quality of the finished installation.  This very significant stride forward means that clients in the water, gas distribution, food processing and other industries requiring the highest standards cam now specify systems such eco-FIT, ELGEF Plus and PROGEF with the same confidence as metal pipework alternatives. Meanwhile customers can continue to benefit from these well engineered systems’ speed of installation, versatility, low weight, durability and other key attributes. Crucially GF Pipe System’s new ultrasonic based, non-invasive testing will see the company’s internationally recognised partner provide a responsive on-site service which can check up to 20-30 separate welds per day. The NDT service is backed by a 10year guarantee.
