Matthew Dean is the SEND Research and Innovation Manager at Keele University, working on the UK’s first campus‑wide Smart Energy Network Demonstrator (SEND). Operating at a genuine town scale, the 600 acre Keele campus functions as a living laboratory where energy technologies can be tested, and operated in real‑world conditions. Matthew works across a fully integrated energy system that brings together renewable generation, battery energy storage, smart buildings, low‑carbon heat, electric vehicle infrastructure, and the HyDEX green hydrogen demonstrator. A core strand of his work focuses on real‑time energy data, sensors, and control systems that enable whole‑system optimisation across a complex, multi‑vector network. By using the Keele campus as a living, operational testbed, Matthew helps generate practical insight into how emerging technologies perform at scale and how future energy systems could be cleaner, smarter, and more responsive.
